Trying to Have a Lil Fun While Saving the World or at Least my Piece of it.

We’re Having a Party and Need to Raise Some Dough! August 18, 2009

The BLK ProjeK continues its hustle to turn a piece of neglected parkland into a flourishing, cooperatively, community owned & run urban farm.

The BLK ProjeK is currently planning the Libertad Urban Farm Family Fun Block Party. The block party will be a day of urban farm awareness, a chance for community members to become acquainted with the possibilities of what an urban farm can mean to their community, how to get involved as well as having a bunch of fun while doing it. This block party will also serve to help raise funds to continue to get this initiative under way.

There will be performances, workshops, raffles, demonstrations and food. We need your help! Help us to raise funds to pull this off!

Our current date is September 26th, 2009 from 12-6 PM. The location: Fox Street between Leggett Avenue and 156th street in the Boogie Down Bronx.

All donations are tax deductible, since we are still in the process of applying for 501(c)3 status our current fiscal sponsor is Mothers on the Move.

Walking Slowly but Getting There July 15, 2009

A Lil Farm WarriorSo, I am moving slowly along but making a significant amount of progress. I am this close to solidifying a pro bon lawyer to help with the 501(c)3 process. Yay!

I have also been working diligently on the potential farm site. Dwaine has been of an immense help moving this project forward. The potential of what is sitting on the horizon scares the beegesus out of me but also makes me giddy. The process is still an uphill battle but we are making headway. We did our first planting a couple days after Mike J died so we did the planting in his honor while boogeying to his greatest hits. Then last week we hit up Dimitri’s and planted some beautiful hydrangeas, a Sands Cherry Tree (he does not produce cherries lol) and some geraniums.

The Geraniums and other plants are looking smashing, however our hydrangeas aren’t doing so well and our sunflowers never sprouted. Then there are little things that throw you off, like people who let their dogs shit right next to gorgeous flowers.

I take a deep sigh and remember it’s all a process.

BLK_GRL_LOGOI am so excited about the progress that is being made on The BLK ProjeK.

The BLK ProjeK’s mission is to address food justice, public & mental health as they specifically relate to underserved women of color through culturally relevant education, beautification of public spaces, urban gardening and community programming. By creating easily accessible resources and enriching the lives of women who are routinely overlooked and overburdened yet serve an important and critical role in the larger fabric of society we will strength the overall mental and public health, as well as elevate the collective self esteem of the larger communities they live in.

We are in the process of incorporating and then vetting out 501(c)3 status, in the meantime we will continue our successful alternative health program Holistic Hood and keep grinding to bring the first urban farm to Hunts Point.

Tres exciting!
